Offier's dirk to the 72nd Duke of Albany's Own Highlanders. Single fullered and edged blade with spear point. Blade marked on one side with thistles, the Queen's crown, 'VR in ornamental writing, the regimental name 'Duke of/Albany's/72/Own/Highlanders', thistles, makers Royal Warrant insignia, and name 'Hawkes/ - & Co - / London/Manufacturers/to the/Queen. One the other side, thistles and battle honors Hindoostan, Cape of Good Hope, Sevastopol, Central India. Brass decorated mounts on leather scabbard with regimental number '72' on top mount of scabbard. Ebony hilt topped with cairngorm. Matching knife and fork ensuite.
Condition: Two studs missing. Hawkes & Co. were granted their first Royal Warrant in 1809, during the reign of King George III.

The 72nd Highlanders was a British Army Highland Infantry Regiment of the Line raised in 1778.
Under the Childers Reforms of 1881 it amalgamated with the 78th (Highlanders) Regiment to form the 1st Battalion of the Seaforth Highlanders.
Battle honours won by the regiment: Hindoostan, Cape of Good Hope 1806, Crimean War: Sevastopol, Central India, Second Anglo-Afghan War: Peiwar Kotal, Charasiab, Kabul 1879, Afghanistan 1878–80, Kandahar 1880.
