Officer's dirk to the 74th (Highland) Regiement. With bright fullered blade notched along the back and with false double edge at the point. Etched along one side with Henry Wlkinson, Pall Mall, London and battle honours starting with The Elephant, superscribed 'Assaye', then from Seringapatam to Peninsula (12 places listed) and foliage, and on the other regimental badge, 74 Highlanders, crowned cypher. Rare owner’s monogram of a bird (pigeon) on a tree stump circles by thistles. Ebonised baluster grip carved with basket weave set with brass studs, gilt-brass mounts comprising basal mount cast and chased on each side with the regimental badge between thistles against a finely punched ground, and pommel embossed and chased with thistles and lilies en suite and set with a piece of faceted glass against yellow foil, in original wood-lined black patent leather scabbard with gilt-brass mounts embossed and chased with thistles framing respectively the figure of St. Andrew, battle honour to 'Assaye' and '74', the by-knife and fork en suite with the dirk, and retaining nearly all its original gilding. Blade: 29 cm.

 

The monogram belongs to the Clan Walkinshaw, representing a Martlet. This clan has its originine in Renfrewshire, close to Glasgow. The regiment was raised in Glasgow. It is assumed that this dirk belonged to an officer from the Clan Walkinshaw. Condition. Very good. Pristine blade.

  • The 74th (Highland) Regiment of Foot was a British Army line infantry regiment, raised in 1787. In 1881 as part of the Childers Reforms, the 74th was amalgamated with the 71st (Highland) Regiment of Foot to become the 2nd battalion, Highland Light Infantry.

    • 1959: Royal Highland Fusiliers. The Highland Light Infantry was amalgamated with the Royal Scots Fusiliers to form the Royal Highland Fusiliers.
